To get ready for Valentine’s Day, I am doing a week of red velvet on my blog this week. And as I set out to decide what recipes to make, I realized that red velvet doesn’t have to be all about dessert!! How about starting off the special day of love with a stack of these pancakes??
Red Velvet Pancakes
Adapted from I am mommy
1 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1 large egg
¾ cup buttermilk
¼ cup sour cream
1 teaspoon red food coloring (or more if you want them more red!)
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Combine all dry ingredients in a large bowl and set aside. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, buttermilk, sour cream, food coloring and vanilla. Add wet ingredients to dry, and mix just until combined.
Pour about 1/3 cup onto medium/high griddle and lightly brown on both sides.

Yummy! I think I’d use beet juice for the coloring to make them healthier : )
I’ll never look at breakfast the same way again. I must make these Valentines Day weekend!!
Very tasty but I had to add 1/3 cup milk to make the batter spreadable and 1-1/2 tbsp butter for richer flavor.
I made these today to experiment for a valentines day breakfast. I don’t know how I will be able to go back to regular pancakes, but I must, because based on the recipe there is no way these are healthy. However, they are absolutely delicious!
After one trial run, I am declaring success in adapting this to a Bisquick recipe. I always use Bisquick to make pancakes. Also, since I had more blue than red food coloring, and it’s Super Bowl Sunday, I made them green for the Packers.
*Green Velvet Bisquick Pancakes*
2 c. Bisquick
1 tsp. baking powder
2 Tbsp. cocoa powder
3 Tbsp. sugar
2 eggs
3/4 c. buttermilk (see note)
1/4 c. sour cream
2 tsp vanilla
generous squirts of blue + yellow food coloring
NOTE: I used 2 tsp. white vinegar in milk to 3/4 cup total as a buttermilk substitute. Lemon juice works too.
Next time I might use twice as much cocoa and sugar. The pancakes were really chocolate scented more than chocolate flavored.

These were really tasty and just the right amount for 2 people! I’m used to separating the eggs and beating the whites to fold back in, but these weren’t too heavy and skipped the fuss!
